How to Make More Money by Improving Your Business English

Many students have different motivations for improving their Business English.  Perhaps the motivation is financial, family-related or to travel.

Money can certainly be a big motivator, and there is nothing wrong with that.  A healthier financial situation can give you more options in live, freedom to work in the area that motivates you the most, and freedom to travel, among many other things.

But how does improving your business English enable you to make more money?

In many careers within many countries, it is a well established fact that those non-native speakers who do speak English to a high level earn more money.  I saw one statistic that stated that those employees in fact earn 30% more.  That seems about right to me – Of course there are many people for whom speaking English will result in an even greater increase in income, but let’s go with the 30% for now.

That 30% is not just for one month – once a high level of English has enabled them or empowered them to be able to earn the additional amount, this is likely to stretch over their entire career.

Let’s suppose that a person earns USD $1,000 per month. With a high level of English they might expect to earn USD $1,300 per month.

That’s USD $300 per month extra. Which is 12 x $300 = $3,600 per year.

And over the course of a 20-year career that would be $3,600 x 20 = $72,000

This example is not even based on the fact that someone’s salary is likely to increase significantly over the years, and therefore the 30% will be on the increments, not just on the initial amount.  And then of course there’s inflation and other factors to take into account as well.

The bottom line is that, by learning English to a high level, you can really increase your earnings substantially over the course of your career.

Nevertheless, I think these figures are only part of the story. Improving your business English might increase your immediate earnings but more importantly it will open up a world of opportunities.

For example, improving your business English to a certain level might allow you to participate in the interview process for your dream job.  And the increase in salary might be much more than 30%.  Apart from the monetary gains, the opportunity to further your career, travel to other countries, manage other business lines, meet new people and enjoy more fruitful business relationships provide advantages that it’s really difficult to put a price on. What I’m saying is that it is not just about the financial side of things – nice though it would be to receive a higher salary – but about the massive increase in opportunity that dominating the English language can bring.

Would you like to earn more money and enjoy more freedom? Quite frankly, who wouldn’t?

I have talked to many students over the years who completely understand and accept that improving their level of English, and in particular, their level of business English, would allow them to enjoy a greater level of opportunity and financial freedom, but their actions don’t always match their goals and this is where some students fall down.

If you know where you want to get to and why, then for me the logical next step is to make sure you are taking the correct actions to get there!  This means establishing an appropriate study plan and being realistic about the time it will take you to get there, not giving up and focusing on making progress week after week and month after month.  Having a great plan and sticking to it will enable you to meet your goals, whether they are money-oriented or if you wish to achieve some other aim.

So, some food for thought there!

I’m going to finish up with a question.

Why is improving your level of Business English important to you?

Is is to make more money or for some other reason, or a combination of different factors?

Please let me know what you think.

Al the best and have a great week!
